Celebrating World Bee Day: Strengthening Slovenian-Belgian Bonds and Promoting Bee Conservation

The commemoration of World Bee Day at the Kalmthout Arboretum was a collaborative effort between the Slovenian Embassy in Belgium and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food. State Secretary Tatjana Buzeti and Ambassador Barbara Sušnik, alongside other esteemed guests, graced the occasion. In honor of the event, a bee tree was ceremoniously planted.
The Kalmthout Arboretum, which has served as a symbolic link between Slovenia and Belgium for many years, proudly showcases a Slovenian linden tree and a descendant of Maribor's ancient vine tree, the oldest of its kind in the world. Since 2021, the arboretum has been adorned with a Slovenian beehive. State Secretary Tatjana Buzeti remarked, "Once again, it is bees that have brought us together today. The establishment and growth of this arboretum are owed to the devoted efforts of our compatriot, Jelena de Belder Kovačič, whose invaluable knowledge and dedication have contributed significantly."
Secretary Buzeti emphasized the profound connection between Slovenians and bees, underscoring their commitment to the protection of bees and bee products. She highlighted that Slovenia's initiative led to the proclamation of World Bee Day and the presentation of the international Golden Bee Award for three consecutive years. Furthermore, she expressed confidence in the progress achieved at the European Union level, citing Slovenia's advocacy for accurate labeling of honey blends and their origins, which garnered support from a majority of member states.
Continuing her address, the State Secretary emphasized the crucial role of the beekeeping sector in safeguarding bees and other pollinators. Beekeepers face multifaceted challenges, including climate change, environmental pollution, biodiversity loss, as well as economic hurdles related to competitiveness and bee health. The presence of attendees at the event was a testament to their shared determination and dedication to the preservation of these vital creatures. Secretary Buzeti concluded by encouraging everyone to contribute to their protection, even through small gestures like the planting of a bee tree on that very day.
