Today, Prime Minister Dr. Robert Golob held a crucial meeting with representatives from relevant ministries to address the aftermath of recent storms that have affected the entire country.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister unveiled significant amendments to the Natural Disaster Recovery Act, considering the escalating impact of extreme weather events. On one hand, he emphasized the need for preventive measures, while on the other, he highlighted the necessity for legislative changes to empower the State in providing effective assistance during natural disasters.
Under the new amendments, municipalities will now be entitled to a 20% advance payment for emergency measures based on a preliminary recovery plan. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of conducting partial cost estimates without waiting for a full damage assessment. Once cost estimates are available for each affected area, further action can be promptly taken.
Furthermore, Dr. Golob pointed out the inclusion of a vital provision for agricultural producers who suffer 100% crop damage. They will now receive rapid compensation under the de minimis system, facilitated by a specialized procedure in line with legislative adjustments. This compensation process is expected to be accessible later this year. The Prime Minister acknowledged the unfortunate delays people have experienced in receiving reimbursements for such costs after natural disasters in the past year.
The overall aim of these legislative changes is to streamline response measures in accordance with the European framework. The government's objective is to measure responsiveness in months instead of years, believing that timely assistance benefits both local communities and agricultural producers. Dr. Golob concluded by emphasizing the significance of swift action, expressing a commitment to providing expedited aid to those affected by natural disasters.
